Helena was discovered in 1864  by four miners who were known as the “Four Georgians” on their search for gold.  They did find gold at Last Chance Gulch  and word of their discovery spread far and wide bringing hundreds of people hoping to strike it rich.  The town that sprang up due to this vast influx of people was named Helena in tribute to an area miner’s hometown.

This lovely historical timepiece rests on a fluted pillar  that rises 14 feet above the sidewalk.  In the beginning the clock was owned by a resident of Rimini, in 1940 he discarded it on an old scrap pile behind his house. Bill Brown of Helena Hardware then acquired the timepiece and eventually restored it.

The clock  was created by the Brown Street Clock Company in  Pennsylvania sometime around 1913.  It stands at more than 14 feet tall with a galvanized steel base and weighs more than 1200 pounds.  The clock in its heyday would sell anywhere from $500-700.00.

The clock today sits in front of Sole Sisters store on the 300 block of North Last Chance Gulch and is great advertising for this unique Helena store.

The Great Divide Orchid Society to hold its flagship event this month.

The Orchid Show and Sale will be held at Capital Hill Mall in Helena and everyone is encouraged to enter their blooming orchids. Ribbons and awards will be given by American Orchid Society judges to the winners of each category.  Orchid art will also be judged.  Hundreds of beautiful and unique orchids will be on display.  There will also be a raffle and vendors will be selling live orchids all weekend.

The twenty five foot fire tower is an official Helena landmark.  Built in 1876 to protect the town against another fire that would destroy the downtown area, it was meant to watch over the city.  It is Helena’s symbol of security.  the octagonal cabin at the top of the tower was manned twenty four hours a day.  if a fire broke out, an alarm was sounded and the whole town came out to fight the fire. There use to be many of these towers scattered throughout Helena, today this is the last of the great guardians left standing in town and one of only five that exist in the United States.  Located next to the fire tower is a wonderful hillside picnic area with a breathtaking view of Scapegoat, Little Belt and Sleeping Giant mountain ranges
