Making Helena an Outdoor Paradise

A group of 50 volunteers kicked off the trail-building season in South Hills this week. The plan is to continue expanding and improving the trail systems. The land trust plans, maintains and builds the network of hiking and biking trails for the City of Helena.

This month they are focusing on the Upper West Side to complete the new Mike Cormier Trail. Volunteers create the new trail and help eradicate an old fall line that was prone to erosion. This trail will connect LeGrande Cannon Boulevard to the Ambrose Trail farther up Mount Helena. They also remove old fencing and any other hazards that may be laying in wait for unsuspecting hikers or bikers.

Once the trail is complete it will offer outdoor enthusiasts sweeping views of the valley and North Hills off in the distance.

The creation of these new trails should help disperse trail use on Mount Helena, so that no one trail is handling all the hiker traffic. The South Hills Trail system now boasts more than 70 miles of trails

Year round fun in Helena

In 1989 Colonel Charles Broadwater built the well-known Broadwater Hotel and Natatorium. This grand resort housed the world's largest indoor swimming pool and was created to utilize the warm waters of four local, natural Hot Springs. Granite boulders formed two indoor waterfalls, one hot and one cold. In 1941 the hotel closed, its grand heyday over.

But today the property enjoys a revival and is home to the Broadway Athletic Clubs with three Hot Spring pools, an outdoor lap pool that is well protected and used year round. There is also a year round Recreational pool that is perfect for family fun. There is nothing like swimming in the perfect 95 degree water in a Montana winter snow storm.

Carroll College

College plans renovation.

Carroll College has been given a $522,00 rant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno , Nevada. The college will utilize this grant for the renovation of six of its labs as well as classrooms and preparatory spaces on the second floor of the Simperman Hall science building. It will also purchase and install new equipment to improve the facility.

The Grant will also be used by the college to establish the E.L.Wiegand Undergraduate Research Center.

This grant is the key to Carroll's new biochemistry/molecular biology degree program. This new program and improvement to the facility are aimed at enhancing Carroll's academic programs and continuing Carroll Colleges reputation as a premier regional pre-med and undergraduate research institute. The generous grant from Wiegard Foundation will expand the college's offerings to students interested in professional and research careers in the life sciences.

Serving Helena's National Forest

Created in 1999, the Montana Discovery Foundation's purpose is to support the natural resources of Helena National Forest as well as supporting education and stewardship.

To this end, the Foundation offers interpretive publications, guided hikes, the annual Nature Crafts event, a Leave No Trace educational program, the Adopt-a-Species program, the Youth Forest Monitoring Program and many many more.

Take advantage of the Forest cabins, historic cabins that are now available for public recreational use. These wonderful cabins offer a unique outdoor adventure for those who would like to recreate in the Helena national Forest.

The Montana Discovery Foundation are also the guardians of Spring Hill. Partnered with the Prickly pear land trust and the Montana History Foundation tey have already secured more than 450 acres of Spring Hill and are trying to raise monies to purchase the rest. by doing this, the Montana Dicovery Foundation is insuring this pristine area is accessible to hikers, bikers and skiers for generations to come.
