Are you interested in Montana’s history? Would you like to explore historical, archaeological and ethnological relics that relate to Montana and nearby regions? The Montana Historical Society Museum is located near Montana’s State Capitol, Helena and offers an enormous amount of historical information. Long term exhibits include paintings and depictions of flora, fauna and landscapes at the time of Lewis and Clark. Another innovative exhibition is "People and Environment" which examines the life and times of the people who have lived in Montana and spans a period of 12,000 years.  The museum also houses an outstanding collection of oils, watercolors, pan and ink and sculptures by the well-known western artist Charles M. Russell(1864-1926).  probably the most unique of the exhibitions is "Big Medicine".  Big Medicine was a white bison that was born on the National bison Range on Montana’s Flathead Indian reservation.  This bison’s life is celebrated in this exhibition.  This white buffalo represented great spiritual power and was held as sacred by the Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

The museum is also the custodian of the original Governor’s Mansion.  This grand, historic house located at 304 North Ewing Street has been the home to nine governors.  Today thanks to the Historical society this three-story Queen Anne style mansion has been painstakingly restored to its original splendor.  Tours of this wonderful structure are offered year round.
