A 5 year study of grizzly bear DNA shows that these beautiful animals are back in full force. The study by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that there are approximately 765 grizzly bears in northwestern Montana. This is the largest population of bears documented in more than 30 years. The comeback of the grizzly bear is welcome news to those in Helena and the rest of Montana.
This latest study was supported by Montana ranchers, farmers and Republican leaders as a first step to take the grizzlies off the endangered species list. The majestic bear has been threatened since 1975 and hunting restrictions have been in place to protect their population.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently reviewing all of the information as required by the Endangered Species Act. These results will help tell biologists whether these bears still need federal protection.
