Snow Kiting in Montana

A Truly, Unique Winter Sport

Snow kiting started in the Big Sky State around a decade ago when the first skiers and snowboarders harnessed themselves to a parachute-like kite.  This allows them to jump, race and do incredible tricks.  The sport initially took place on frozen lakes but since has moved to steeper, back country terrain.

The Montana Snowkite Rodeo is held annually on Presidents Day weekend at the Georgetown Lake in Montana.  This is a four-day competition that attracts snow kiting competitors from around he globe. Kite companies showcase their latest equipment an innovations.  The Rodeo lets racers showcase aerial stunts, tricks, kitercross races and big air events.

Snow kiting is a newer sport and Keith Kallio is the man who is considered by most to be the father of kiting in Montana. It was his vision that brought the first Snowkite Rodeo to Montana.
