Restoring Historic Helena Trolley
Bringing new life to historic No.3
The old No. 3 trolley carried whisking Helenans to and from work from 1909 to 1927.With the arrival of buses and automobiles the trolley was retired, eighty years later the trolley is back in Helena and thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers will soon be brought back to its earlier glory.
The Helena Lewis and Clark County Historic Preservation Commission in partnership with the county Historical Society and Capital High School has begun restoring the historic trolley piece by piece. Once finished it will serve as an interpretive exhibit detailing the old mass transportation system of Helena.
Trolley car no. 3 was one of the more modern trolleys, complete with electric lights, heaters and windows that slid down into the trolley wall, turning the whole car into an open air vehicle.
The city of Helena has already donated $9,800 to the restoration project and donations are still being accepted to help bring this historic piece of the past back to the present.
