“Gates of the Mountain”

A wonderful, secret gem on the Missouri River

For more than two centuries, travelers have ventured down this stretch of the beautiful Missouri River to marvel at these natural breathtaking stone giants. What is seen is huge, towering limestone walls that rise dramatically from the riverbed.

These incredible cliffs were first discovered by the members of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805.

Today, visitors can enjoy this view from the back of one of three open-air tour boats, the Pirogue, the Sacajawea, or the Hilger Rose. This 105-minute tour begins at the marina and follows the Missouri River.

Spectators can also catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep, mountain lions, beaver, deer, eagles and many other animals that call this area home. Enjoy the Meriwether Picnic Area for lunch or take in some swimming, fishing or hiking.
