At the South end of Last Chance Gulch in Helena Montana lies historic Reeder’s Alley. This is the location of the town’s oldest buildings and tells the story of Helena’s mining boomtown. The alley gets its name from Louis Reeder, a stone layer from Pennsylvania who arrived in Helena with the hope of striking gold and becoming rich. He built several rows of brick tenement apartments for incoming miners. Although by no means luxurious they were sturdier and drier than tents. They were so sturdy in fact, that they have withstood the test of time and can still be seen and enjoyed to this day. Louis Reeder died in 1884. In 2000 it was donate to the Montana Heritage Commission for preservation.
