Townsend Montana has a lot to offer, ghost towns, National Forest and working ranches, Townsend is a great weekend escape.
The ghost town of Hassell originated in 1866 when gold was discovered on Indian Creek and continued till 1880. However gold is not what made it famous, it is known for the huge Diamond Hill Stamp Mine which is still in operation today. Historical artifacts, including old buildings are still visible.
The Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area is located 1 mile north of Townsend and it is a perfect habitat for ducks, geese, pheasants, Canadian Geese, double-crested cormorants, white pelicans, and ospreys. It is a wonderful place for bird watching, bird hunting and research.
The Flynn Ranch is a 15,000 acre cattle ranch that offers guests a true, authentic ranching experience. Horseback riding, calf branding, cattle herding, fixing barb wire fence, irrigation, fly fishing are just some of the activities awaiting guests.
