The word POW Wow originated from the Pawnee word pa-wa meaning "to eat" other meanings for the word signifies a celebration or a special time for people to gather for special occasions. In historical times Native Americans would invite friends and relatives to share a meal, enjoy dancing and enjoy displays of weaving, quill work or other artistry. Pow Wows were also important religious ceremonies for Native Americans. Pow Wows are still a gathering of people but today they are more concerned with sharing tribal traditions and cultures with the public as well as within their own communities. In the Northern part of the country the Pow Wow season stretches from June through September. Helena, Montana will be hosting their annual pow wow in the last part of September.
