South Hills Trail System

An extraordinary system of open space and trails just minutes from downtown Helena Montana.

The People of Helena enjoy more than 1,600 acres of City owned public open space and adjoining National Forest land directly across from the downtown area and residential neighborhoods. For the hikers, bikers, bird watchers and strollers who live here, this is an unparalleled Mecca, access to thousands of acres of public land is literally, right outside their door. The South Hills consists of over 75 miles of mapped trails.

The terrain includes rugged, rolling hills criss-crossed by arroyos. Trails meander through conifer forests and open to large grassy meadows, through quaking Aspens and meadows of wildflowers. The trail system offers breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding landscape and spectacular views of Helena. The trails can climb to nearly 6,000 feet in elevation in spots.
